Notice of Data Security Incident

 

Upper Township, New Jersey is providing information regarding a recent data security incident that involved its network environment. The confidentiality, privacy, and security of personal information is among the highest priorities for Upper Township, and we regret any inconvenience this incident may cause.

What Happened

On December 8, 2025, Upper Township discovered suspicious activity in its network environment. We promptly responded and launched a comprehensive investigation to confirm the nature and scope of the incident. The investigation determined that an unauthorized actor gained access to our environment on or around October 5, 2025, and accessed or acquired certain files. Upper Township conducted a thorough review of the files involved to confirm what information was contained within them and to whom it relates for purposes of providing notice. This file review was completed on April 13, 2026.

What Information Was Involved

The investigation determined that the files involved contained personal information. Depending on the individual, this information may have included names in combination with one or more of the following elements: Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, state identification card numbers, financial account numbers, credit or debit card numbers, usernames, email addresses, passwords, or security questions and answers. Upper Township is currently unaware of any attempted or actual misuse of this information.

What We Are Doing

Upon becoming aware of the event, Upper Township immediately shutdown the potentially affected systems. We have taken steps to implement additional safeguards and review our policies, procedures, and processes related to data storage to reduce the likelihood of a similar future event. We also notified federal law enforcement regarding this incident.

Additionally, we are providing individuals whose personal information was potentially affected with written notice via mail on May 27, 2026, which includes complimentary access to credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Cyberscout.

Steps Affected Individuals Can Take

We encourage individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing their account statements and monitoring their free credit reports for any suspicious activity. If you notice any unauthorized or suspicious transactions, you should report them immediately to your bank or credit card company.
