Build Responsibly
Make informed choices when you renovate or build a new home.
Flooding and Construction
Living in a floodplain carries with it risk that we can, to some extent, prepare for. If you’re rebuilding, repairing, constructing an addition, or building a new structure, consider your property’s flood risk as part of the construction process. Utilizing resilient construction techniques will save you money in the long run and help to keep your household safe.
Applicable Ordinances
We have several regulations and processes in place to reduce flood risk for present and future construction projects. Review them carefully before beginning a project. By following our permitting process and abiding by our codes, you’re developing responsibly and contributing to the safety of our community. We’re always here to help if you run into questions or have concerns!
Beginning January 2021 any resale of a home requires a flood compliance inspection. You can learn more by reading the outreach letter (PDF) and you can submit the flood compliance inspection application (PDF) to the Engineer’s Office.
If you construct a new home or detached garage, build an addition, construct renovations or make repairs to your home you will need a construction permit from the Construction Office and/ or a flood development permit from the Engineering Office. Some repairs to your home may not require a construction permit but may require a flood development permit if the cost of the repairs exceed $10,000. These repairs include: roofing, siding, windows, interior renovations, bathroom renovation, kitchen renovations, etc.
Always check with the Zoning or Engineering Department before you build on, alter, regrade, or fill on your property. A permit may be needed to ensure that projects do not cause problems on other properties.
